World War 2 remains discovered at Marsh Park

There will be a FREE talk by Clive Westwood from Wolverhampton Archaeology Group on Wednesday 5th March starting 7.15pm at St Michael’s Church Bell St South. Clive will be showing finds and discussing the WW2 lookout post foundations uncovered recently on Marsh Park. This site is a fascinating and tangible link to the town’s historic past. All welcome.

The Friends of Marsh Park have been working with Wolverhampton Archaeology Group and Dudley Council to excavate a dig and discovered the foundations of a WW2 look-out tower on the site. For the past few Sundays, volunteers have met and worked together to explore the site. There is evidence of a two-storey block house with a crow’s nest style roof space on floor one, to look out for approaching aircraft during WW2. The site would have been manned by the Royal Observer Corps in the early years of the war and then by local Home Guard volunteers until the end of operations. Do you have any pictures or family stories about Marsh Parks history in WW2? If you had a family member in the Home Guard or know of anything that would help us dig into the heritage of the areas hidden past, please get in touch with Frank at culture@brierleyhill.net.
